Aloha Ko`olau - Alice Namakelua

Aloha ka noho `na o ke Ko`olau
Huli aku nânâ i ke kuahiwi

Pi`ina i ka nuku a`o Nu`uanu
Nounou e ka ua la i ka `ili

Ka ne`e a ka noe mamua pono
A he nani a he nani ke `ike aku

Kiholo a ka wailele i nâ pali
Ho`opulu i nâ pali hâuliuli

Ka ua nounou i ka `ili
Me ka `ohu kau mai lâ i ka piko

Ha`ina e ka ua o ke Ko`olau
Ho`opulu ana i ku`u papalina

Alice Namakelua

I love living at Ko`olau
To turn and look at the mountains

Climbing the gap of Nu`uanu
The rain pelts the skin

The creeping of the mist right ahead
Is beautiful to see

Waterfalls tumble from the cliffs
To moisten the dark cliffs

The rain pelts the skin
And the fog settles on the peak

Tell of the rain of Ko`olau
Moistening my cheek

Souce: Hula Records Album: "Alice Ku`uleialohapoina`ole Nämakelua" - The composer, vacationing with friends at Punalu`u in the summer of 1958, was driving along the windward coast enroute to Honolulu. As they approached the Pali it began to rain, the mist hovered overhead and water was running down the road. When the mist lifted, the mountains and waterfalls were spectacular. These beautiful things were the inspiration for this mele composed December 31, 1959. Copyright 1973, Heinz-Guenther Gerhard Pink
