Hula by Nona Beamer - This `Ai
Ha`a chant honors Nihoa, the highest unpopulated, leeward,
northwestern island of the Hawaiian chain, nearest the main
islands. Ka`ahumanu gave the name to the waterfront of
downtown Honolulu in honor of her visit to Nihoa. Ka`ulakahi
(the single flame) is the channel between Kaua`i and
Ni`ihau. Wailua, in Kaua`i, is noted for the important
birthstones. Emalani, Queen Emma, was the wife of Kamehameha
IV.
