Hola E Pae (5:00 Hula) - Traditional

E pupue iho au mawaho la
Ma loko mai ʻoe o ka lumi la
O ke kani o ka hola e pae la
ʻIke pono ʻia ka pae ʻōpua

Ke lawe ʻia ala ke aloha la
E ka ʻaeko hulu melemele la
Ke lawe ʻia ala e ka manu la
E ka nūnū maka onaona

ʻAʻole no au e hopo ana la
I ka ʻumi haneli kaukani la
O ka emepela Napoliona la
Ka makua o ka naʻi aupuni

Haʻina ʻia mai ka puana la
Ma loko mai ʻoe o ka lumi la
O ke kani o ka hola ʻe pae la
ʻIke pono ʻia ka pae ʻōpua

I crouch inside
You`re inside the room
At the strike of the hour of five
Clearly seen are the cloud banks

Brought there is love
By the yellow feathered eagle
Found there is the bird
The sweet-eyed dove

It`s not for me to worry about
The ten hundred thousand
The emperor Napoleon
Is the father of the conqueror of the kingdom

The story is told of
You inside the room
At the strike of the hour of five
Clearly seen are the cloud banks

Source: Charles E. King, the great composer, was also a great collector of Hawaiian songs. One of the songs he preserved tells the story of a lover who arrived too early for his rendezvous. His sweetheart was in the arms of someone else.
