Ka `Ano`i (Aia i Alaka`i) -Kamealoha/ Kamehaokalani

Aia i Alaka`i ka `ano`i
Nä pua keu a ke aloha

Ke aloha ka i hiki mau loa
No`u a no ia la kekahi

`O ia la ka pua i poni `ia
I kukuni pa`a `ia ka `i`ini

He `i`ini kau no ka mana`o
`O häli'a hana mau i ke kino

Ku`u kino ua lono i ka leo
I ke kani a nä manu o uka

Aneane hiki mai `o `Uila
Ke äiwaiwa o luna

Näna e kaomi na mäno
Häkuko`i ka wai i nä pali

Ha`ina `ia mai ka puana
Nä pua keu a ke aloha
There at Alaka`i is the desireable one
The flowers overjoyed with love

Love is forever coming
Just mine and sometimes, for her

She's the blossom blessed
Desire is branded permanently

Wanting takes over my thoughts
Good memories endlessly run through my being

My person is attentive to the voices
That are sounded by the birds of the upland

`Uila soon will be coming
The amazing one of the heights

It was she who dammed up the springs and wells
Water just overflowed over the cliffs

The story is told
About the flowers overjoyed with love

Source: Keola Donaghy & Sahoa - This mele was published in a songbook "Ka Ho`onanea o Nâ Home Hawai`i", printed in 1888, by the Honolulu Commercial Advertiser, forerunner of our present Honolulu Advertiser. The composer is credited as Kamealoha, which may have been John's adoptive father, Paulo Kamealoha. This song also appeared in the Hawaiian language newspaper "Ke Ko`o o Hawai`i", 29 Augate 1883, Buke 1, Helu 2, pg. 8. It is given as a mele inoa for Kapi`olani, is credited to Kamehaokalani, and includes different stanzas and lyrics from the mele credited to Kamealoha. The melody as it is sung today is different from the way it was sung then. The older mele is presented below
