Kô`ula/Manawaiopuna - Alvin K. Isaacs, Sr.

Nani wale ê ka ua
A`o Kô`ula
Kilihune nei i ka
Ua li`i li`i

`O ka pi`o ana mai
O ke ânuenue
Ho`oheno ana i ka
Wele lâ`au

Kaulana mana
Wai a`o puna
Ke kumu o ka wai
A`o manuahi

Kûmaka ka `ikena
`Ia wailewa
Ko`iaweawe i ka
Wele lau pali

E ola ka `ôpua
Kû kilakila
Ma ke kihi o ke ao
A`o malama

Puana ka inoa
Poina `ole
Kaulana nâ
Manawaiopuna
Manawaiopuna Falls

How beautiful is the rain
Of Kô`ula
The misty rain
Little drops

Way up high is
The beautiful rainbow
Proudly behold its beauty
Over the trees

Famous this spring
Manawaiopuna
The source of the water
Flowing freely

I see
This beautiful waterfall
The tumbling waterfall
Gliding, sliding down the pali

Picture clouds gather and
Rise tall
At the beginning of day
At first light

My song comes to an end
Never to forget
Famous is the beauty of
Manawaiopuna, the source of the stream

Source: Hines Collection, Pueo Pata - Verse 1, 2, 6 - Attributed to Alvin K. Isaacs Sr, this mele with eight verses is a Kaua`i family song. .Kô`ula (red sugar cane) is the old name of a valley and stream in Hanapêpê. Manawaiopuna (stream branch of puna), the 200 foot waterfall at the lower end of Kô`ula is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Hawai`i. Unfortunately, it is almost inaccessible.
