Deaths
1970's
- Dorothy "Dee" Darrigan (RI78) passed away
this year. Unfortunately, we currently have no further information with
regard to the date or a cause of death.
1990's
- Dr. Charles Bean, Lecturer at NYSC in 1996, died in
November that year. He was a retired Professor of Physics from
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was world famous for his
fundamental work in magnetism, including small particle magnets and
superparamagnetism -- a word he coined. In the later part of
his career, he worked in biophysics -- working with porous membranes,
expanding the "snake in the grass" theory of electrophoresis;
and introduced miniaturization and the AC voltage techniques. He
finally had a major influence in developing a theory of magnetotactic
bacteria, bringing magnetism and biology together.
